A frugal turbodiesel gives the $141,300 Cooper D plenty of range, and another Cat A model for Mini to sell here…

SINGAPORE — The Mini Cooper gets diesel power for the first time in Singapore, now that the Cooper D has joined the local line-up. It gives Mini another Category A COE model to offer buyers, and at $141,300 with COE, it slots above the basic Mini One.

The Cooper D has a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine under the bonnet. It’s a turbodiesel that cranks out 116bhp. That sounds fairly modest, but the peak torque output is 270Nm at 1,750rpm.

Top speed is 200km/h, with 100km/h flashing up in 9.2 seconds.

But the Cooper D’s claim to fame is its fuel economy. With a six-speed auto it’s rated for 3.9 litres per 100km. That gives it a theoretical range of 1,130km per tank, says a spokesman from BMW Asia. The Cooper D emits 103g/km of carbon dioxide and qualifies for Euro 5 certification.

As with the new Mini hatch in general, it might be hard to tell the Cooper D apart from earlier models, but it’s a larger car (98mm longer than the predecessor and marginally wider) that offers more practicality. For one thing, the boot offers 211 litres of space, 51 litres more than before.

Meanwhile, for buyers who want even more room, Mini intends to show off the five-door version of its hatchback at next week’s Paris auto show.
