The interior design of MINI’s future models will be simpler, greener, laden with tech and retro-inspired.

There you have it folks, this is what your MINI of the future will look like from the inside. The fourth generation MINI Cooper and Mini Countryman have yet to make a full reveal, but the BMW Group has revealed what we should expect from the upcoming MINI range.
Capitalising on the minimalist dashboard of the original Mini, the current designers have revamped and recreated three “ionic elements” (as said by MINI’s designers) that were in the original British Leyland Minis of sixties lore. Namely the steering wheel, central display and switch panel.
Set in the centre of the dashboard is a round OLED touch panel that emulates the centrally mounted speedometer in the classic Mini. Ahead of the driver sits a new, redesigned steering wheel with a third spoke made of a strip of fabric. Drivers also get a heads-up display (HUD) that displays your driving speed and multimedia information, similar to what we’ve seen in the latest flock of modern Mini vehicles.
Beneath that screen sits a revised switch panel that houses the engine start switch (operated the same way you would turn a key), gear selector lever and a mixture of toggle switches and analogue buttons courtesy of BMW MINI.
It’s a cleaner, more simplified interior with a nostalgic ode to the classic Mini Cooper, with the bells and whistles that we’ve come to expect from the brand. The interior also makes use of more recycled fabrics and dials back on the usage of leather in favour of vegan materials.
No doubt that the MINIs will come with a full suite of safety systems and some level of autonomy (lane keep assist, BMW’s reverse parking assistant to name a few). But we’d have to wait for the full reveal of the new MINI Cooper and Countryman later this year for more details.
