Mitsubishi’s Lancer EX gets a facelift

New looks should give this old timer a boost, but the price remains its winning card

SINGAPORE – The Mitsubishi Lancer EX has just been given a new face, courtesy of a mild makeover.
The four-door saloon is ancient by car standards — it first came out nearly nine years ago — but the facelift gives it fresh looks, with a chrome surround for the grilles and LED daytime-running lights built into the foglight surround.
For reference, this is how it used to look:
There’s still a 1.6-litre engine under the bonnet, paired with a four-speed auto, but the Lancer EX does have contemporary features like keyless entry and starting, and a 7-inch touchscreen sound system with Bluetooth phone pairing.
It’s still cheap, too, at least by Japanese (and made-in-Japan) standards. The Classic model lists for $87,999 with COE, with a bodykitted Sports model priced at $89,999.
That puts it in the same pricing neighbourhood as smaller, made-in-Thailand cars aimed at the ASEAN market (like the Suzuki Ciaz RS) and Korea’s cheapest models, like the Hyundai Accent and Kia Forte K3.
Like other cars sold by Cycle & Carriage, the Lancer EX has pretty much the best warranty in the business: five years or 200,000km overall, and 10 years for the engine. Clearly, its sellers expect it to last. Some kinds of longevity are preferable to others.
