SINGAPORE — The Honda Accord is getting a sibling. There’s a new entry-level variant in the form of the 2.0-litre model, which joins the existing 2.4-litre in Kah Motor’s showrooms here.

We’re big fans of the Accord at CarBuyer, and rate the 2.4-litre model highly for its refinement, reassuring handling and the long list of standard features.

The 2.0-litre model does come with a number of items that make the Accord feel like an exec car, like a powerful sound system with Bluetooth smartphone integration, and the latest model year allows your smartphone to power the car’s navigation system.

It also has the blind-spot camera display that we found useful on our increasingly crowded roads.

Nevertheless, there are differences between equipment levels for the 2.4 and 2.0-litre models.

Among other things, the Accord 2.0 rides on 17-inch wheels (versus 18-inch for the 2.4) and does without memory for the electric driver’s chair.

It loses curtain airbags (leaving side and frontal ones) and there are no paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for the five-speed auto. There’s no self-dimming rearview mirror.

Of course, the biggest different is under the bonnet. The base model’s 2.0-litre engine kicks out 155bhp and 190Nm of peak torque at 4,300rpm (against 174bhp for the 2.4, and 225Nm at 4,000rpm).

That translates to a sprint to 100km/h that takes longer by 1.4 seconds, at 11.9 seconds. Top speed of the 2.0 is 209km/h, against the bigger-engined model’s 224km/h.

Yet, at $157,900 with COE, the 2.0-litre model knocks $12,000 off the price of the Accord 2.4.

We’ve not driven the 2.0-litre model yet, but our advice is to make sure you try it if you’re auditioning the 2.4. Overall, the Accord’s appeal has more to do with its sound engineering than its features or performance.
