Conclusion

The Audi-BMW-Mercedes battle is a bitter one, and its soldiers in this segment have to be especially sharp. That does a lot to explain why the A4 is so recognisably different from before, and why it’s still such a showcase of cutting-edge engineering — mild hybrid tech, a fuel-saving B-cycle engine, lots of connectivity, and still the best virtual instruments in the business.

Cars are a matter of personal taste, of course, but there’s a case to be made that while the Mercedes C-Class is the most classically elegant car in the class and the BMW 3 Series the sharpest one, the new A4 is the smartest. That’s due in large part to some of its AI and Google-enabled features. a facelift is usually about making someone look younger, but in the A4’s case it’s certainly made the car more brainy.
