Welcome back to CarBuyer.com.sg’s comprehensive review of every officially-imported new car coming to Singapore in 2021 – more than 90 cars in all, which we’ve split up into five parts for easy digestion.
Today we cover all the ‘M’ brands. What’s noteworthy? Mazda’s compact SUV the CX-3 finally gets a Cat A engine, Mercedes is launching the new C-Class this year, and not one but two massive Maybachs, and lastly Mini is going hog-wild with special editions.
Missed out on the previous bits? It’s all below, and Part 4 comes out tomorrow!
What: CX-3 compact SUV facelift
Variants: 1.5
When: TBA
How much: TBA
UPDATE: The smaller-engined CX-3 has finally arrived, and we’ve driven it here
Mazda’s most petite crossover first debuted here in 2016 and we were impressed by its tidy handling and efficiency, but it’s always been hampered by an outsized 2.0-litre gasoline engine, which is at odds with its compact segment position. The car had a facelift in 2018, and was sold here in 2.0 with that update until early-mid 2020.
That finally changes in 2021 with the arrival of the CX-3 1.5: Mazda has finally gotten around to giving the car a 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G gasoline engine. According to Mazda’s Japanese spec, the engine makes 110hp and 141Nm of torque, and should deliver fuel efficiency of around 5.0L/100km. Crucially, it will give the CX-3 the competitiveness it always had but was hamstrung by its 2.0-litre engine, as well as COE Category A eligibility.
What: Mazda 2 compact hatch facelift
Variants: 1.5
When: Now
How much: From S$82,888
Mazda’s fourth-gen of its smallest car appeared here in 2016, which is quite some time ago in car-years, and now the little compact hatch gets a facelift along with some significant improvements to bring it in-line with its segment-leading brother, the Mazda 3. It should still pack Mazda’s endemic 1.5-litre power unit, with around 110hp, and still be capable of good frugality thanks to start-stop. Swoopier styling on the front end is the giveaway here, and one major addition to the car is Mazda’s proprietary G-Vectoring Control which allows a smoother ride, and on the inside Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
What: Artura supercar
Variants: TBC
When: Q3 2021
How much: At least S$1-million
The Artura is McLaren’s first series production hybrid car, and will sit in between the GT and the 720S in the brand’s lineup. McLaren has previously used hybrid powertrains, but only on limited run supercars like the P1 and Speedtail.
McLaren describes the Artura as its ‘next generation High Performance Hybrid’ supercar, and while details remain scarce, what is known is that the Artura will use a twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired to an electric motor that drives the rear axle. The car will also be a plug-in hybrid, and is capable of driving in pure electric mode up to a range of around 32km or so.
The car sits on the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture, which has been optimised to accommodate the hybrid powertrain without imposing too much of a weight penalty that results from incorporating the batteries needed to power the hybrid setup.
