What: Kamiq small SUV
Variants: 1.0 turbo, 1.5 turbo
When: Second half 2021
How much: Less than S$130k with COE
UPDATE: We’ve driven the Skoda Kamiq in Singapore, and you can read our review here, or check out our YouTube video below
What’s more popular than a luxury SUV? A small luxury SUV. What’s more popular than a small luxury SUV? A small mainstream SUV. Stating the obvious, yes, but with the Kamiq, the accessible Continental brand Skoda now has something to pin big sales hopes on in 2021. The Kamiq is a small SUV, first announced in August 2019, but COVID presumably threw a spanner in its works.
Competing with the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR, it will be launched here with either a 115hp 1.0-litre turbo engine (like on its cousin the VW T-Cross and most likely) or a 150hp 1.5-litre turbo unit. We should see a generous equipment loadout with many of the key features the similar sized VW T-Cross has, though with slightly less premium finishing and a smaller price tag, the so far and successful play we’ve come to expect from Skoda Singapore.
What: Scala small hatchback
Variants: 1.0 or 1.5 turbo
When: Second half 2021
How much: Less than S$120k with COE
The Scala is, very simply, Skoda’s Jazz. The Honda Jazz is still the most successful compact hatch in Singapore because it packs so much into a tiny body. The Scala takes VW’s Polo platform and stretches it to become larger than a Golf. Compact hatch price and engineering, but with features and space a size up, in other words. It’s also wrapped in a new design that ensures it never looks like a small car, and while equipment spec has yet to be finalised, we could have fancy features like a virtual instrument display and large smartphone-sync-able touchscreens.
Ju-Len’s driven the car in Croatia early last year and he came away impressed, not just because it has a solid drive, but also because it has the largest rear legroom of any VW car on this platform, and a huge 467-litre boot. If Skoda can keep the price around S$110k or less (it just has to be cheaper than the Golf, really) it could have a winner on its hands.
What: Leon small hatchback/wagon
Variants: 1.5 turbo
When: Q1 2021
How much: TBA
Seat’s version of the Volkswagen Golf 8 (which is also arriving this year) will go head to head with its in-house rival when they’re both launched in 2021. Chances are it will feature a price tag that will undercut the Golf too.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol that develops 150hp and 250Nm of torque, while interior features include a 10.0-inch customisable infotainment touchscreen with navigation, a 10.25-inch digital virtual cockpit instrument panel a la Audi, and wireless smartphone charging. But Seat will also trump Volkswagen by introducing the Leon SportsTourer estate model, as Volkswagen Singapore currently has no plans to bring in the new Golf Variant for now.
What: Cupra Leon small performance hatch/wagon
Variants: 2.0 turbo
When: Q1 2021
How much: TBA
Seat’s performance arm Cupra will also introduce the new Cupra Leon, which is essentially their equivalent to the Volkswagen Golf R. Featuring a 2.0-litre powerplant that develops 300hp and 400Nm of torque.
Similar to the regular Leon, the Cupra model also features a 10.25-inch digital virtual cockpit and 10.0-inch touchscreen, but throws in wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Unique Cupra steering wheel and bucket seats up the sportiness ambience inside, while those who desire their Cupra in wagon form can opt for the SportsTourer variant for a really quick way to get home from Ikea.
What: Cupra Formentor small coupe-SUV
Variants: 2.0 turbo
When: Q2 2021
How much: TBA
The Formentor is unique, in that it is a bespoke Cupra model with no Seat counterpart. It takes the form of a sleek coupe SUV, but underneath the platform is the same one as the Seat Ateca, which itself is based on the Volkswagen Golf.
Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol that produces 310hp and 400Nm of torque, and together with four-wheel-drive, enables the Formentor to go from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 250km/h.
