Honda
What: HR-V
Variants: 1.5 hybrid, 1.5-litre petrol
When: Very Soon
How Much: From S$120,000 with COE
First revealed in mid-2021, the third-gen Honda HR-V, like the models before, is built on the same platform as the Honda Jazz hatchback. It was due to arrive in late 2021 but we have new confirmation that the car is launching in Singapore very soon by end Jan – watch this space for an update.
The main draw for the new HR-V will be the styling and the new hybrid system. The car looks larger than before thanks to its visual flair – there’s light bars on both the front and the rear, the front one being a stand-out in the small SUV segment.
Radically different from the previous-gen, we expect the car to be available here with two engine options: the petrol-electric hybrid e:HEV system with two electric motors and a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and the base model with just the 1.5-litre petrol engine. Unless some re-tuning is done as was with the local Honda Civic, the HR-V e:HEV will be a Cat B COE car as it has a total power output of 131 horsepower.
Both variants are likely to come equipped with plenty of active safety systems, most of which are already available in the current Honda CR-V, and this includes Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS, which detects pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Information, Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering System, Cross Traffic monitor (rear).
What: Civic E:HEV
Variants: 1.5 hybrid
When: Q3
How Much: From S$130,000 with COE
Joining the present Honda Civic 1.5 Turbo is the petrol-electric e:HEV model, set to go on sale in Singapore in late 2022. Honda’s unique e:HEV hybrid uses electric power at low speeds, while the petrol engine takes over at steady highway speeds where the internal combustion engine is most efficient.
Like the HR-V and Jazz, the hybrid system will put out 130hp, and should at least better the petrol turbo model in efficiency. Going the hybrid route also means VES benefits, which could turn the Civic’s fortunes around – the petrol turbo is a little spendy for a small/midsized sedan right now. Also, it’s likely that the Civic e:HEV will be in the liftback body, as already seen in other markets.
What: City facelift
Variants: 1.5 petrol RS, SV
When: Q4
How Much: From S$115,000 with COE
Currently, little is known about the refreshed Honda City, but it has been confirmed that the sedan will be getting a midlife makeover and due here at the end of 2022. The engine and trim options are likely to stay the same as the present versions on sale, which means there’s little chance of getting a petrol-electric Honda City for now, unlike the e:HEV model already on sale in Malaysia.
What: i30 N
Variants: i30 N Hatchback, i30 N Fastback
When: Q1
How Much: Indent basis only
Hyundai’s high-performance hot hatchback will get a mid-life facelift in the first quarter of the year, but local distributor Komoco Motors says that the i30 N will be available on an indent basis only. Interestingly, Komoco will also offer the sleek fastback version of the i30 N, a body style which it had not previously offered.
The main change is that the Performance Pack is now standard issue for the i30 N, which means that it will have an impressive 280hp and 392Nm of torque. Hyundai says that it has also cut some weight from the car, improved the brakes, and will offer a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission option alongside the standard six-speed manual gearbox.
Cosmetically, the i30 N features the same design updates as the regular i30, which means revised headlights and taillights and a new grille design. There are also larger exhaust pipes to give the car an even more aggressive stance.
