New look at 2015 Mazda2

Hiroshima, Japan –

Mazda released the first photos of the all-new, fourth-generation Mazda2 compact hatchback today. The car, unsurprisingly, looks like a compressed version of its handsome siblings, the Mazda3 hatchback and Mazda6 sedan, thanks to the firm’s Kodo design language.

It’s still reminiscent of the third-gen model in some ways though, with the wide, almost semi-circle grille and ‘friendly’ eyes, although it obviously looks much more contemporary thanks to the appropriate creases and Mazda’s now signature metallic red paintwork.

Full details have not been released as yet, but Mazda says there will a choice of 1.5-litre diesel (Skyactiv-D) or 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines (Skyactiv G), the latter as found in the Mazda3 hatchback and sedan currently. Skyactiv is Mazda’s umbrella term for its efficiency technologies, which include a capacitor-based start stop system called i-Eloop, lightweight construction and frugal drivetrains.

This shot of the interior shows promise that the Mazda2 might be able to pull off being small but desirable. The two-tone seats look like fabric-leather in combination and far more exciting than the plain third-gen model. Mazda says the 2 will also get its new MZD infotainment system, active safety tech and a ‘spacious and refined interior’.

Local dealer Eurokars Mazda says it’s still considering the Mazda2 for a local launch, but if it happens it will be towards the year’s end. Although high COE prices have culled the ranks of worthy, compact hatches (like the Kia Rio and Picanto, the Hyundai i20, the Volkswagen up!) stiff competition still exists in the form of the Suzuki Swift and the soon-to-be-launched Honda Jazz.
