Nissan claims that the Ariya is their ‘most advanced car ever’, and has packed in a host of tech features to emphasise the point.

The main highlight is Nissan’s ProPilot 2.0 driver assistance system, which incorporates adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist functions, among others. The system can also assist with semi-autonomous lane changes and overtaking manoeuvres, similar to Tesla’s Autopilot system.

Like the Leaf, the Ariya allows for one-pedal driving, or what Nissan calls e-Pedal, whereby the car will be able to move off, accelerate and decelerate simply using only the accelerator pedal. Regenerative braking is activated when the accelerator pedal is released, and with careful modulation the car will be able to slow down to a stop without depressing the brake pedal.

In terms of connectivity, the Ariya features integration with Amazon’s Alexa voice activation system, and a user can connect the car to his own Alexa system at home or on his device for a seamless user experience. The system can also perform over-the-air firmware updates, a feature already available in Teslas but a first for Nissan.

The Ariya marks the first step in Nissan’s plan to introduce 12 new models over the next 18 months, a programme which will also include a new Z-car. But while that model will be the exciting highlight of Nissan’s brand rejuvenation plan, the Ariya will arguably be the most important piece of the puzzle, given its role in helping Nissan gain a firm foothold in the increasingly-vital crossover EV segment.
