If you’re planning to check out the car industry’s premiere event, here’s what to expect…
SINGAPORE — For the second year in a row now, things in the car trade will kick off with a bang. The Singapore Motor Show makes a return at Suntec’s convention centre, and will run from January 14 to 17.
As with last year’s edition, the event is a joint venture between MediaCorp and the Motor Traders Association, the representative body for Singapore’s authorised car distributors.
Having judged last year’s Motor Show a resounding success, they are promising a bigger exhibition this time ’round. If you’re planning on going, here’s what to expect.
Same ticket prices
As with the 2015 Show, entry will cost $6. A limited number of early-bird tickets can be bought for $10, and provide access to the show at 1pm on January 14th — four hours earlier than the hoi polloi are able to get in. Anyone shorter than 120cm gets in for free. Tickets can be bought at the venue itself.
Twice the number of floors
The Motor Show is being expanded. This time, cars will be displayed on the fourth floor, while Level 3’s halls will be filled with accessories and people who sell various products and services to car enthusiasts. Spreading things out over two floors should help the event feel less congested.
A Swift return
Stunt performer Russ Swift will be back to once again show off his impressive skills in Subaru cars. His cunning stunts include driving on two wheels, high-speed doughnuts, parallel parking by handbrake, and a dance routine that’s best described as ballet on wheels. The shenanigans have to be seen to be believed, and Swift invites passengers from the crowd. If you happen to be one, bring a strong stomach.
Large crowds — maybe
The 2015 show was well-attended, with 52,000 people trawling the halls at Suntec. Whether this year will be as crowded is an open question, given that 2015’s Motor Show came at the end of a six-year hiatus for the event. Without the benefit of pent-up demand, will the 2016 be just as crowded or will it suffer from sophomore slump? It may well be that 2015 only saw fit to whet the appetites of the car-buying public for more. In any case, what exhibitors want to see is not healthy attendance figures per se, but healthy sales numbers. That brings us to the main reason for the Motor Show, the…
… 22 car brands
A large number of brands have confirmed their participation, and between them they offer just about everything under the sun. Alas, high-performance carmakers have excused themselves again — you won’t see the likes of Aston Martin, BMW Alpina, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren or Porsche — but that doesn’t mean there is no reason to be there. The Singapore Motor Show has become something of launching pad for key models from many brands, who see the event as a chance to collect orders. That being so, a slightly competitive environment in terms of pricing and deals is something to be expected. Whether or not the Singapore Motor Show will have anything to see, there will surely be something to buy.
