Following a strong show of performance at the Jakarta Formula E weekend, the Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E team now leads the driver and constructor’s championships.
JAKARTA, INDONESIA
The Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E team has shown its dominance at rounds 10 and 11 of the Formula E calendar, emerging from the double-header race weekend at the top of the standings for the championship.
For the uninitiated, Formula E is a single-seater, open-wheel race series governed by the FIA that involves fully electric race cars. It’s a simple format; 22 cars from 11 teams, lined up on a circuit completing a 45-minute (plus one lap) race to gain the most points in the championship.
The points system is nearly identical to that of F1: points for the top 10 finishers, an additional point for the fastest lap, plus a 3-point bonus for pole-sitters in qualifying.
It’s often said that the best drivers in Formula E will cross the finish line with exactly zero per cent charge in their batteries.
And such was the case for Pascal Wehrlein of the Tag Heuer Porsche Team as he rounded the final corner during the weekend’s first race with just 0.2% charge left in the Porsche 99X Electric racer’s batteries and crossed the line in P1 ahead of Jake Dennis of the Avalanche Andretti team and Maximilian Gunther from Maserati MSG Racing.
Tag Heuer Porsche’s second driver, António Félix da Costa – a former Formula E champion himself, crossed the line in P8. The combined 29 points garnered during round 10 of the Formula E calendar enabled the Porsche team to surge past the Envision Racing team to take the lead in the championship.
On Sunday’s race, Wehrlein and Da Costa placed themselves 6th and 11th on the starting grid, the former having been eliminated in the quarter-final duels in qualifying. As the race began, both Porsche drivers fought their way to the finish line, Wehrlein himself having been bumped by Nick Cassidy (Envision Racing), who was in the lead of the Formula E WDC contention.
Cassidy’s collision sent him to the pits for a new wing and consequently dropped him out of the points in the 11th round of the E-Prix. Max Gunter (Maserati MSG Racing) took home first place, a significant win for the Maserati team who last saw victory in a single-seater car in 1957 when Juan-Manuel Fangio won at the Nurburgring. Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) took P2 and Mitch Evans of Jaguar TCS Racing claimed third.
At the conclusion of the weekend, Tag Heuer Porsche have 212 points in the constructor’s championship, while Pascal Wehrlein himself re-claimed the lead in the driver’s championship with 134 points. The title fight for the Formula E drivers championship will be a tight one, with Jake Dennis just a point under Pascal and Nick Cassidy with 128 points.
Of course, the world of motorsports is a highly contested environment with numerous drivers committing to other FIA-sanctioned race series. Antonio himself will be participating in the gruelling 24 hours of LeMans later this month.
Nyck De Vries, a former Formula E and F2 champion himself, has switched out his Formula E race car in favour of the second seat at Scuderia AlphaTauri on the Formula 1 grid. But we’d have to wait until September to see how he performs on the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
