Of the current crop of German small lux SUVs, the X1 has been around the longest, with the first X1 (based on the 3 Series) running from 2009 to 2015. The second-gen replaced it in Singapore in 2015, bringing the move to front-wheel drive via BMW’s new UKL small car platform.

That car was immediately popular, but like the first-gen Audi Q3 mentioned before, you paid less for an X1 and felt it – it neither appeared, nor behaved like a Big BMW, and its jittery ride quality was another bugbear.

That’s not the case with the facelifted X1, which landed here in 2019. In design, it now looks far better, and we still have a hard time telling it apart from an X3 now, thanks in part to the more aggressive front end and bigger kidney grilles.

The interior is the same in terms of volume, but BMW has made concrete steps to improve the materials and insulation, resulting a more premium-feeling cabin. It also helps that the X1 receives a new 8.8-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system, again bringing it in line with what larger BMWs pack.

The X1 was one of the first small SUVs to see a uber-flexible rear section too, with movable seats (they move fore-and-aft by up to 12cm, and also are adjustable for backrest angle) to take on 505-1,550-litres of cargo.

We recommend the lesser variant, as usual, the X1 sDrive18i with the 1.5-litre inline three cylinder turbo. It may not have the power or looks of the X1 sDrive20i M Sport model, but it’s more comfortable since the busy ride quality still remains an issue on Singapore’s bumpy roads.

As of September 2021, BMW has consolidated the X1 line-up, and the sDrive18i is the sole engine variant available for sale in Singapore, with the more powerful sDrive20i model having being dropped. Prices start at S$200,888 with COE for the X1 sDrive18i xLine, while the sportier M Sport trim pictured here goes for S$204,888 with COE.
