Singapore – Porsche’s latest incarnation of it’s sporty SUV has been unveiled. With new sharper looks, better fuel efficiency and an extensive breadth of standard features. With over half a million Cayennes sold world-wide, Porsche’s sticking to the formula that work: A sports SUV with five seats, plenty of room and stonking performance to boot.
The new generation of the Cayenne will be launched in six versions: Cayenne, Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne S Diesel and Cayenne Turbo. The highlight however, is the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, which is the first plug-in hybrid premium SUV.
The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment, featuring a 10.9 kWh lithium-ion traction battery, which enables an all-electric driving range up to 36 km.
The power of the electric motor has been more than doubled from 47 hp (34 kW) to 95 hp (70 kW). The Combined fuel consumption is 3.4 L/100 km. The three-litre 333hp V6 supercharged engine produces a combined system power of 416 hp at 5,500 rpm and a total system torque of 590 Nm metres from 1,250 to 4,000 rpm. Results: Zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 243 km/h. The traction battery can be charged from the electric power grid or while driving.
The Cayenne gets a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. 0-100 takes 7.7 seconds and it maxes at 230km/h. Fuel figures stand at 9.2 L/100 km.
The Cayenne S receives a new 3.6-litre V6 twin-turbo engine with 420 hp and 550 Nm of torque. With its standard eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds) – 0.4 seconds faster than the previous Cayenne S. Top speed is now 259 km/h with fuel consumption at 9.5 L/100 km.
The Cayenne Turbo will have a 4.8-litre V8 twin-turbo engine with 520 hp and 750 Nm of torque. Zero to 100 km/h takes just 4.5 seconds, and it will top out at 279 km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at 11.2 L/100 km.
Diesel Cayennes get either a 3.0-litre V6 (Cayenne Diesel) or a 4.2 litre V8 (Cayenne S Diesel). The 3.0-litre produces 262 hp and 580 Nm. 0-100 km/h takes 7.3 seconds (7.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package), and tops out at 221 km/h. Fuel is sipped at 6.8 L/100 km.
The 4.2-litre V8 of the Cayenne S Diesel makes 385 hp and a meaty 850 Nm torque figure. Launching the SUV to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (5.3 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package) and onwards to 252 km/h. Efficiency is rated at 8.0 L/100 km.
The fuel efficiency improvement was achieved by modifications to the entire drivetrain, plus new enhancements to the Auto Stop/Start Plus coasting function. On top of that, active cooling air flaps open or close according to the specific driving situation and cooling needs. Fully open, they aid cooling. Once closed, they improve aerodynamics which reduces air drag which helps to hurt the world less.
At first glance, the new Cayenne is designed to look wider than the outgoing model. New bi-Xenon headlights are standard on Cayenne and S models, with Porsche trademark four-point LED daytime running lights. The Cayenne Turbo, is further emphasised by LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) fitted as standard.
Both the front and rear of the new Cayenne receives the wider treatment with a design that integrates visual elements more elegantly. The exhausts are now integrated in the lower rear section. An automatic opening/closing tailgate is fitted as standard.
Inside, the designers devoted much of their effort to the driving environment – the driver now gets a new multi-function sports steering wheel with paddle shifters as standard; with looks and operations based on the 918 Spyder’s wheel. The rear seats have been designed to be more comfortable, with seat ventilation now available as an option.
New exterior and interior colours are available for all models. Highlights include the exterior colours carrara white metallic and palladium metallic that are available for all models. All models can be ordered with an interior in the two-colour colour combination black/luxor beige at no extra charge. Dark walnut-burr trim is a new optional feature available for the interior.
