Mainstream Ferraris too ho-hum for you? Then what you need is something extra, extra special… 

MARANELLO, ITALY — For the man who has everything, Ferrari offers off-menu items that bring exclusivity to another level altogether.

The Prancing Horse team has just delivered the first Sergio (above), one of only six examples of a model that will either disappear into the bowels of the car collector underworld, or appear from time to time at exhibitions for people to gawp at and pretend to know all about.

In case that person is you, the Sergio is based on a 458 Italia, so it basically uses that car’s screaming 4.5-litre V8. That gives it 605 horsepower, and the ability to bend your face with savage acceleration.

The name is meant to honour Sergio Pininfarina, the design studio that has turned so many Ferrari models into pieces of art through the decades.

But the main point of the car is the unique coachwork and the concept car looks. And while there are probably dozens of 458s in any given metropolis, the Sergio is always going to be the rarest of sights.

The first customer, the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in Abu Dhabi, has already taken delivery. Since the other five have been spoken for, you can’t have one even if you win the lottery a few times over.

While Ferrari has announced its first Sergio delivery, the boys in red have also unveiled the FXX K, this LaFerrari-based experimental vehicle that gives customers the chance to feel like part of the factory’s development driver team.

Like the Enzo-based FXX of a decade ago, it’s a test mule for new tech that Maranello intends to roll out across the main Ferrari range, like aero ideas or control systems. The “K” in “FXX K” refers to the car’s KERS (or Kinetic Energy Recovery System) setup, which has been tweaked over that of the LaFerrari.

Here the electric motor produces 187 horsepower (up from 160) and the 6.3-litre V12 makes 848 horses (up from 789) for a total output of 1,035. Makes the regular LaFerrari’s 950 horsepower seem kinda weak, doesn’t it?

Ferrari’s FXX programme doesn’t actually let you take possession of your car, mind you. It’s yours to play with, but the factory hangs on to it for you for safekeeping. They’ll trot it out for you on various racing tracks around the world from time to time.

That’s because it isn’t road-legal, like McLaren’s P1 GTR.

Just as well, because the price tag is US$3.1m (or S$4.07m) without taxes or a COE. Factor those in, and your calculator would explode.

Not that it matters, because the car is already sold out. Maranello says it will build no more than 40, but it will decide on the final number after screening applicants to see how many people of them to turn away. 

Ferrari will build you a heavily customised car with its Tailor Made programme, or even build you a one-off car from time to time, but the FXX programme is for people that the factory thinks of as family (i.e. a rich uncle), apparently.
