Competitors and Conclusion
Perhaps the biggest hurdle for the Suzuki Ignis to overcome is its asking price of more than S$110k with COE. The ever-popular Suzuki Swift utilises the same drivetrain, has a similar amount of interior space, and costs around S$15k less.
More astonishingly, for the same amount of money as the Ignis you can buy a Suzuki Swift Sport, Of course the Swift Sport only comes with a manual gearbox and insurance premiums will be higher, but it is the most affordable performance car you can buy in Singapore brand new now.
There’s also the somewhat pedestrian, utilitarian, but still-popular Mitsubishi Attrage and hatchback sibling the Space Star still on sale. The Mitsubishis are also driven by very basic 1.2-litre engines and have no mild hybrid assistance, but at less than S$85k with COE each they are the most affordable new cars in Singapore now.
The Suzuki Ignis is priced very closely to the Honda Jazz e:HEV, and for the experience, it’s tough to favour the Ignis over the 98 horsepower found in the Honda Jazz. Sure the Ignis looks tougher than the Jazz’s overly cute face, but the Jazz is a much quicker car with much better fuel economy.
Also worth noting is that the Ignis is priced well over Kia Cerato EX and Hyundai Avante territory. Neither of the Koreans are as efficient and do cost more to maintain over the years, but they are a lot more refined and offer much more car for the money.
The price of the Ignis could be lower if the car had lower CO2 emissions, but as it stands, it rates a VES B on the scale so gets no rebates unlike cleaner cars in the VES A2 band which give them a S$15,000 rebate. If the Ignis had achieved the VES A2 rating it would have a price tag of just S$100k rather than the present S$115k, and that would really help make it more attractive to potential buyers.
