Singaporeans risk a S$312,000 fine for pumping RON95 petrol in Malaysia now

Petrol is expensive in Singapore, so naturally some inconsiderate motorists took the first chance to cross the border and top up on the cheapest blend of petrol in Malaysia

ERRATA: We first published this story on the premise that Singaporean individuals would be fined if they bought RON95 petrol in Malaysia. This is incorrect, as only the petrol vendor is liable for a fine/jail under Malaysian law. Our mistake, and we apologise for any inconvenience or misunderstanding.

MALAYSIA

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak took to Facebook yesterday, two days after the borders between Singapore and Malaysia reopened – calling out Singaporean motorists for filling up on 95 octane petrol across the border.

Najib’s Facebook post shows an image of a Singaporean at a petrol station filling up a Toyota Estima. Although pumping petrol in Malaysia seems to be a common thing among Singaporeans, the yellow petrol pump handle indicates RON95 petrol, which is where the problem lies.

RON95 petrol is the cheapest grade of petrol available in Malaysia priced at RM2.05 (S$0.66) per litre, which is reserved for Malaysians as the prices are subsidised by the Malaysia government. The sale of RON95 petrol to foreigners has been prohibited since August 2010.

Under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the sale of the RON95 grade of petrol to foreigners is a punishable act under Malaysian law. An individual who is caught can be fined a maximum of RM1 million (S$312,000), three years in jail, or both.

This news also comes not long after a Singapore-registered car was photographed in Malaysia on April 1 using a car jack to tilt the vehicle hoping to pump more petrol.

With the recent amount of visitors streaming into Malaysia, Najib added that the Malaysian authorities should start monitoring the sale of petrol to foreigners but find it difficult for petrol kiosks to actively monitor the sale of RON95 petrol to foreigners due to a lack of manpower.

Currently, RON95 petrol is currently priced at RM2.05 (S$0.66) per litre in Malaysia, making it the “11th lowest price in the world and is cheaper than some of the major oil-producing countries and Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Oman,” added ex-Malaysian prime minister Najib on his Facebook post.

Foreigners are allowed to purchase RON97 petrol in Malaysia which is priced at RM3.91 (S$1.26) per litre, still cheaper than prices in Singapore going at S$3.02 (RM9.37) per litre and S$3.51 (RM10.90) per litre for RON97.

Assuming a person pumps a full tank (50-litres)of RON95 in Malaysia, that would cost RM102.5 (S$33). However, if that person were to pump a full tank (50-litres) of 95 Octane at Shell in Singapore, that would cost S$151 (RM469.50).
