BYD has launched its new Dolphin EV in Singapore, with the small electric hatchback priced at S$156,888 with COE

BYD has launched its new Dolphin electric car in Singapore, at an event held at the Waterway Point shopping mall in Punggol. The car retails for S$156,888 inclusive of COE and a S$25,000 VES rebate, which makes it the most affordable fully-electric passenger car on sale in Singapore currently.

BYD will be displaying the Dolphin at the Village Square Atrium of Waterway Point until 9 July, and the brand says that the car is targeted at the younger demographic, many of whom reside in the Punggol area, hence the choice of location for the car’s launch.

The Dolphin was first previewed locally at the Singapore Motorshow earlier this year, and its arrival marks a significant push by BYD to further stamp its presence in Singapore, having emerged as the top selling EV brand here for the first half of this year with over 300 units sold to date.

Powering the Dolphin is a single electric motor that produces 94hp (70kW) and 180Nm of torque, which allows it to slot comfortably in COE Category A. 0-100km/h comes up in 12.3 seconds, and the car delivers a WLTP-rated range of 340km on a full charge with its 44.9kWh battery. Energy consumption is rated at 15.2kWh, and the Dolphin takes 42 minutes to charge from 0 to 80 percent on a 60kW DC charger.

Despite the Dolphin’s attractive price tag, the car comes with an impressive array of standard features, including driver assistance and safety systems such as adaptive intelligent cruise control, front and rear collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection with lane departure warning and assist, among others.

It also comes with the 12.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen that’s rotatable in either landscape or portrait format, as seen in the BYD Atto 3, while there’s also Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, voice assistant, and over-the-air software update capability.

The Dolphin’s bigger sibling, the Atto 3, is also available with a Cat A variant

BYD’s official distributor in Singapore, Vantage Automotive, aims to build BYD as a lifestyle brand beyond cars, and the launch of the Dolphin follows hot on the heels of the BYD by 1826 lifestyle dining concept, which opened its first outlet at Boat Quay in June. The second BYD by 1826 lifestyle store will officially open at Suntec City Mall on 21 July, and the brand expects to have a total of nine such stores open in Singapore by the end of this year.
