The current eighth-generation Golf might be the last of its kind, as the brand prepares for an all-electric future
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer shared with German news outlet Automobilwoche that the brand will not be developing a ninth-generation Golf, after the current eighth one reaches the end of its lifecycle.
Following an update to the current generation in 2024, the brand will wait and see “how the segment develops”.
“If the world develops completely differently than expected by 2026 or 2027, then we can also launch a completely new vehicle again. But I don’t expect that to happen. So far, that’s not planned,” Schaefer shares.
Despite that, the brand intends to keep the legacy of the Golf alive in the electric vehicle world. Schaefer shares that “with the Golf in particular, it has to fit the genes. Just calling any vehicle that doesn’t work. We won’t make that mistake.”
Despite the brand launching the e-Golf in 2014, it’s since been discontinued in favour of the fully-electric compact ID3 hatchback. According to Schaefer, a new electric Golf would require a flatter roof in comparison to the ID3, and will not be until 2028 at the earliest, when the brand launches its new SSP electric platform.
Last month, Volkswagen unveiled the ID. 2all concept EV, inspired by the eighth-generation Golf, and is one of ten new electric models that will be launched by the brand by 2026. By 2033, the brand aims to only produce fully-electric cars in Europe.
