Cycle & Carriage has signed an agreement to become the official distributor of Smart cars in Singapore, with the Smart #1 set to debut in the first half of 2024

Local dealership group Cycle & Carriage (C&C) has announced that it has signed an agreement to become the official distributor for Smart cars in Singapore. The first model from the brand that C&C will introduce here will be the Smart #1, which is set to arrive in the first half of 2024.

The Smart car brand started out as a joint venture between Daimler-Benz and Swiss watchmaker Swatch in the 1990s, but later become a fully-owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. The brand was known for its compact Smart ForTwo city car, which was never officially sold in Singapore, although a handful of units did make it on the roads here via parallel imports.

In 2019 however, Mercedes-Benz agreed to sell a 50 percent stake of Smart to Chinese automaker Geely, and the brand was restructured to pivot to become a fully-electric carmaker. The partnership will see new Smart cars being built in China, and share platforms and technologies with fellow Geely brands like Volvo and Polestar.

The first Smart model from the new collaboration with Geely is the #1, which is a compact crossover SUV that’s slightly smaller than a Mercedes-Benz GLA. In base form, the Smart #1 has a power output of 200kW (268hp) from its single rear-mounted electric motor, and a 66kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery that’s good for an electric driving range of between 420 to 440km. There is also a high-performance dual-motor Brabus version with 315kW (422hp), although there’s no word on its availability for Singapore.

C&C further adds that the new Smart showroom in Singapore will be located on the third floor of the Mercedes-Benz Center along Alexandra Road, and will be ready by the third quarter of 2024. In the meantime, C&C will conduct roving roadshows around Singapore to promote the brand and allow interested customers to test drive the car.

The move to introduce Smart in Singapore marks an expansion of C&C’s plans to tap into the growing electric vehicle (EV) market here, and follows on from the dealership group’s introduction of the Chinese EV brand Ora in 2023. It also holds the rights to Maxus, another Chinese brand that focuses mostly on electric commercial vehicles and large MPVs, as well as Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Citroen and Mitsubishi, although it has suspended sales of the latter brand due to new emissions regulations resulting in uncompetitive products.
