Singapore Motorshow 2024: ICE and hybrid cars that are still relevant

Electric vehicles dominate the Singapore Motorshow floor this year, but here are some ICE and hybrid cars at the show that are still relevant

SINGAPORE

Nissan Serena e-Power

Nissan is previewing its new Serena e-Power at the show, and although it is dubbed a new generation model in the press release, in truth the car is just a major mid-cycle update, albeit a pretty substantial one. The big-selling Serena e-Power proves that there is still a market for seven-seater multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) in Singapore, as evidenced by clutch of such vehicles launched at the show, and the car will be made available in seven or eight-seater variants when it goes on sale here in the second quarter of 2024.

The new Serena gets a revised front end styling redesign, as well as a new second-generation version of the e-Power electric drive hybrid system that now uses a 1.4-litre three-cylinder engine that serves as a generator, and charges the electric motor which in turn drives the car. The car now produces 120kW/160hp, an increase from the 100kW/136hp from the outgoing model, although torque is down slightly from 320Nm to 315Nm.

Honda CR-V

Another new model that is available in two seating variants is the all-new sixth-generation Honda CR-V, which is offered in both five and seven-seater format. The complete model change comes with a new clean sheet design, with its imposing black grille up front, and larger dimensions, including a generous 2,701mm wheelbase, translating into more interior room for passengers.

Standard features include a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an interior ambient lighting system. The more expensive 7-seater variant also adds a 10.2-inch digital driver instrument cluster, an electric panoramic sunroof and hands-free power tailgate. Prices start at S$246,999 for the CR-V 5-Seater, and S$256,999 for the CR-V 7-Seater, both inclusive of COE, although there are substantial discounts and deals to be had at the Motorshow.

BMW X2

BMW’s X2 appeals to younger buyers looking to make a first step into crossover motoring, and the all-new second-generation model is making its debut at the Singapore Motorshow. Sharing the same platform at the X1 with which it shares the floor space, the X2 features sleeker and more individualistic styling for those looking to stand out for the crowd.

Despite its sportier stance, the X2 actually has a bigger boot than the X1, 20 litres more in fact. The rest of the interior is familiar BMW, with the Curved Display large combined infotainment screen and driver instrument cluster dominating the dashboard. Just one variant is available, the X2 xDrive16i which is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo with 122hp and 230Nm of torque, which means it qualifies for a Category A COE, and pricing starts from S$233,888 with COE.
