Gothenburg, Sweden

More details about Polestar’s forthcoming large electric SUV, the Polestar 3, are trickling out ahead of the car’s official unveiling on October 12, 2022.

Polestar is pitching the large SUV, which is around the same size as a BMW X5 or Volvo XC90, as a sporty, technology leader, with high performance powered by electrons – not just on the road, but also in the digital realm too.

It says the car will be packed with the ‘latest high-tech components’ including ‘centralised core computing from Nvidia’ and suppliers Zenseact, Luminar, and Smart Eye.

American technology company Nvidia is best known for its graphics processing units (GPUs) in the computer industry, but has made big forays into onboard car technology including infotainment, autonomous/assisted driving. On the Polestar 3, this could refer to the new Nvidia Thor system which will integrate various driving functions into one at an eye opening 2,000 teraflops.

UPDATE October 13, 2022 : Nvidia will supply a central processing unit for the Polestar 3’s advanced safety systems, not the Thor system.

Meanwhile, Zenseact is Volvo’s (also Polestar’s parent company) ADAS (autonomous driver assistance systems) software offshoot. Luminar specialises in LIDAR technology, which the Polestar 3 will use to be able to ‘see’ the world better, while Smart Eye is a ‘Human Insight AI’ tech specialist.

In other words, the Polestar 3 will have a very fast CPU, tying together ADAS software from Zenseact, which will be taught how to better see the world through Smart Eye’s AI, and will do it with LIDAR systems from Luminar.

What will excite driving enthusiasts more is the fact that all models of the Polestar 3 will debut will a twin-motor/AWD layout. There will also be twin-chamber adaptive air suspension, with a 500Hz refresh rate, claims Polestar.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s CEO, says: “It’s this instant ability to transform from a comfortable cruiser to a sharp, agile performance car in less than the blink of an eye that makes Polestar 3 special as an electric performance SUV. It also benefits from a low centre of gravity and wide track for ultimate stability, and an exciting feeling behind the wheel.”

The Polestar 3 will have active torque vectoring, ie it will be able to push torque to the outside rear wheel in turns, for increased cornering performance. An optional Performance Pack means the most powerful version will have 507hp (380kW) and 910Nm of torque, along with sport tuned dampers and air suspension, and special golden seatbelts.
