Maserati has unveiled its all-new GranTurismo coupe, which will feature an electric variant for the first time. The new car also marks Maserati’s return to the grand touring coupe segment, after the discontinuation of the previous, first-gen GranTurismo which lasted from 2007 to 2019.
While the new GranTurismo broadly shares the same proportions silhouette as its predecessor, with its long bonnet and short tail, the car actually sits on an all-new architecture that has been engineered to accommodate the various different types of drivetrains. The architecture is supposedly also earmarked for the brand’s future models as well, such as the next generation Quattroporte and Ghibli.
The car features classic Maserati design elements, such as the large front grille with the Maserati Trident logo, which is flanked by the new vertical headlight design that has been seen on Maserati’s recent new cars like the MC20 and Grecale. At the back, the car remains recognisable as a Maserati, with the LED taillights set out in a slim horizontal look that has become the brand’s trademark.
Maserati did not release pictures of the new GranTurismo’s interior, but it says that it will feature a ‘clean and modern design’. There will be a 12.3-inch infotainment display, accompanied by an 8.8-inch touchscreen for the air con and ventilation settings. The infotainment system will use the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) operating system, and will allow for over-the-air software updates when required, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also be available.
For the driver, there will be a 12.2-inch digital instrument display with switchable designs depending on the drive mode, as well as a configurable head-up display. There is also a digital rear view mirror, a feature first seen on the MC20 supercar, while the iconic Maserati clock on the centre console has been reimagined as a digital showpiece that is fully customisable to display various driving and connectivity information.
At launch, three versions of the GranTurismo will be offered. Two will be powered by Maserati’s new Nettuno 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine that also sees use in the MC20, with the Modena version producing 490hp, and the high performance Trofeo model developing 550hp. The Trofeo also gets a more aggressive look, with carbon fibre trims on the side skirts and rear bumper, and a gloss black grille.
The headline model of the range though is the fully-electric Folgore, which will be Maserati’s second all-electric model after the Grecale SUV. The GranTurismo Folgore will feature three motors, one in front and two at the rear, that combine to put out a total of 760hp and 1,350Nm of torque. It will also have torque vectoring, to send power to each individual wheel as needed for optimum control.
More impressively, the car also gets an 800-volt battery system, with a capacity of 92.5kWh, and Maserati claims that the car is able to gain 100km of charge using a 270kW DC charger in just 5 minutes. Despite the electric drivetrain, Maserati insists that the car will retain its iconic sound by carrying out some acoustic engineering on the motors to replicate the aural sensation of its traditional V8 powerplants.
The petrol models will come with four driving modes, namely Comfort, GT, Sport and Corsa. GT is the default setting which offers a balanced setup, with Comfort being the softest setting and Sport designed for hard driving. Corsa is the ‘track mode’, which will switch off most driver aids, and the driver has the option of turning off the electronic stability control system completely as well.
For the Folgore EV model, Comfort mode is replaced by Max Range, which limits the car’s maximum speed to 130km/h, and reduces the power of the throttle and climate control to save energy once the battery charge goes below 16 percent.
The GranTurismo also boasts a suite of advanced driver assist systems, including Maserati Active Driving Assist, which incorporates functions like active lane assist with emergency lane keeping. There is also Dynamic Road View, which shows a 3D reconstruction of the surrounding traffic on the digital dashboard, and Rear Emergency Braking, which can intervene if it detects an impending collision while reversing the GranTurismo.
The new GranTurismo is set to go on sale across Europe towards the end of this year, and while its arrival date for Singapore has not been finalised yet, expect to see the car here some time in 2023. Pricing details have not been announced too but the GranTurismo’s price in Europe should start from around 200,000 Euros, which would put it in the territory of rivals such as the Ferrari Roma and Aston Martin DB11.
