Following an exposé by a leading broadsheet, homegrown automotive news portal, CarBuyer Singapore have decided that distributing hardware is now the way to go

SINGAPORE

Recently, homegrown leading automotive solutions and media brand owner, UCars, has been in the spotlight. A major local broadsheet reported on 18 March 2024, that trouble was a long-time brewing from within. UCars, which owns two auto media brands – CarBuyer Singapore and Top Gear Singapore, and an automotive vehicle trading software solutions provider – PCOM-SSB, began facing mounting debts almost three years ago. Severe cost-cutting measures, which included the retrenchment of the beloved media division, were still severely below par, to steer the company into the black. 

More recently, Chief Executive Officer of Ucars, Hong Chun Mun, stepped down from his role, and was replaced by a young 30-year-old Wynton Lee, who hails from Farquhar VC – a major shareholder in Ucars.

Along with the new top management, the controversial decision was made for the storied CarBuyer Singapore brand to be repurposed as a hardware dealership. New CEO Wynton Lee said: ”With the existing online presence of CarBuyer Singapore, one only needs to take a minor shift to make us Singapore’s leading go-to brand for hardware. I like to think that cars are like tools, with the end-destination, the objective. So, it is not difficult to think of tools as being vehicles, which are there to help deliver an objective… Be it driving a nail into a wall with a hammer, or driving a rivet to connect a few sheets of metal. After all, you are still the driver.”

CarBuyer Singapore’s newly appointed Editor-In-Chief, Clifford Chow has also been tasked with sourcing for committed suppliers. “For now, we have just one aluminium ladder on sale, but to ensure a steady stream of returning customers, we need to have more ladders,” he mentioned.

We hear from insiders that due to experiencing the loss of his entire team of editorial colleagues, Clifford now seems to have become obsessed with the aluminium contraptions. On the other hand, fellow colleague, and Content Specialist, Mu’tasim Mohammad, has decided that he would call it a day, as the product shift does not align with him. We approached him for a statement…

A new brand, a new beginning

“The newly-minted ToolBuyer Singapore will bring a breath of fresh air to the hardware retail industry” said Wynton. He also stressed the importance of the brand’s new mantra, “Making You The Tool Expert.” As for what consumers can expect, he said: “Our readers and customers will benefit from informative reviews of the latest tools, and how-to videos; the latter to which those who love to DIY will appreciate.” 

With the new branding and business direction, a positive sounding Wynton adds: “ToolBuyer Singapore will be poised for greatness.” We also have a new motto he adds: “Tools of Character, Change of Knowledge – or what is internally known as TOC COK.”
