Meet the nominees of the Best Funky X Fashionable Car Award for CarBuyer Singapore’s Car Of The Year

SINGAPORE 

CarBuyer Singapore’s very first Car Of The Year awards is here! We shortlist the best of Singapore motoring from 2022, and you vote for the winner! 

However you look at it, for many people cars are emotional purchases, and not every car purchase needs to be dictated by reason. This category is for cars that appeal to the fun side, and while some are practical and some are not, they will all make you grin in appreciation every time you look at them.

So here are the nominees for CarBuyer Singapore’s  Best Funky X Fashionable Car Award:

BMW 430i Convertible

Convertibles are rarer than ever these days and this is why they turn heads more than ever. The new BMW 4er drop-top is much improved, and all the debate about the large front intake grilles have been done and dusted. But importantly, the 4er Convertible looks athletic and fashionable.

Derryn says: With the same underpinnings as the BMW 4 Series coupe but in a cooler package, the convertible is a car for people who know eaxctlay what they want, whether it’s win-in-your-hair driving, or head-turning attention.

Citroen C5 Aircross

A spacious family car that isn’t very expensive but still turns heads, Citroen’s crossover SUV gets an oxymoronic upgrade over the previous version with a smaller engine. This makes for a very fuel efficient, family-friendly urban SUV.

Lionel says: Spacious, with comfortable seats and a drive-it-all-day kind of vibe, the Citroen C5 Aircross is an interesting product, a cool car for people that aren’t necessarily excited about cars.

Hyundai Staria

Hyundai’s futuristic Staria van is all about space and comfort, and it certainly looks funky and far-out from the outside at least. Under the skin though it’s a pretty conventional, and very large petrol drivetrain. 

Ben says:
The Hyundai Staria is a great choice because it shows that MPVs need not be boring. With its space-age design that’s guaranteed to turn heads, the Staria lets you drive your family and VIPs around in absolute style.

Mini Convertible

Minis are all about fun and fashion, though we have more practical Minis like the Countryman these days. Here however, the ragtop Mini gets a second midlife update, keeping it up to date with current tech. 

Lionel says:
It’s exactly what you would expect from a drop top Mini, and the Cooper S variant is still a fun, fast car. It’s likely the last time you’ll find the turbo four-cylinder in a Mini, as the brand moves towards electrification in the future.

Suzuki Ignis

High COE prices have put a damper on small car sales in Singapore over the last couple of years. However, don’t forget the Suzuki Ignis, Singapore’s smallest SUV-shaped car with a totally outsized character and mild hybrid drive.

Kimberley says: This crossover SUV takes fun and funky to a whole new level with its quirky design and four-only seating configuration. Despite the small engine it still provides some fun as you cruise around town, even if a lot of it comes from curious passers-by intrigued by the Ignis’ eccentric design.
