If your expectations of BYD cars are still shaped by cars like the cheap BYD M3e, it’s time to leave them behind. Crazy COE prices jacking up car prices to ridiculous levels aside, the BYD Atto 3 is such a dramatic leap in evolution that it feels like the brand has crammed 10 years of improvement into three.

Lionel says: A cheap car in Singapore anymore is entirely relative, considering the country’s COE prices now. But the BYD Atto 3 is a seriously refined EV that can run with the best that the SOuth Koreans and Japanese can offer.

Citroen C4

The contemporaneous styling is a big draw for the new C4, but the fact that it has lots of equipment, and a decent amount of practicality and can be quite efficient are what should stand out for buyers now.

Lionel says: Comfortable, yet still with a reasonably dynamic drive and very fuel-efficient engine, this French urban coupe-SUV ticks all the right boxes when it comes to value.

Kia Sorento Hybrid

Some might baulk at paying more than S$200k for a Korean car, but the Sorento can do almost everything a luxury SUV can for almost half the price.

We’ve always known that hybrids are the bridge between the ICE and the Electric Eras, and the Kia Sorento proves it by being a worthy hybrid haven for cleaner family motoring.

Kimberley says: He still ain’t heavy, he’s my hybrid! Seven seats, all the safety assist systems you could need, the Sorento Hybrid is kind of expensive but is packed to the rafters with great features.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

A perfectly comfortable car that’s not so edgy looking anymore, but the lack of any fuel-saving hybrid features blunts its long-term ownership prospects. Yet if the swoopy coupe-SUV thing is what you’re after, the Eclipse Cross gets you a lot of car for the money.

Lionel says: The standard drivetrain may not be all that exciting these days but it’s still a very refined drive and boasts a spacious, comfortable cabin.

Once we get over the sad, dreary fact of high COE prices that are not coming down, the Peugeot e-2008 is, objectively, a very refined and posh EV that’s great for urban driving, but could do with more range and a punchier motor feel.

Lionel says: Compact, stylish, and all electric, this car is truly one of the top small EVs you can get in Singapore now.

Skoda Octavia RS

The quiet achiever of Singapore’s Skoda lineup aims to balance a sporty drive experience with the refinement of an executive sedan. It’s not a crazily exciting sports sedan, but has plenty of confidence and ample power for family-oriented driving enthusiasts. It’s perhaps best to see the Octavia as a medium sized GT car for driving enthusiasts that also value refinement in their daily drives.

Derryn says: As we mentioned in our second look story, with power, space, tonnes of features, and usefulness, we don’t understand how Skoda makes money on the Octavia RS. That’s a huge green flag for a value champ right there.
