Meet the Mercedes GLE Coupe

It seems Mercedes has gone coupe crazy, with this BMW X6 rival joining four other new coupes in the three-pointed star line-up in 2015…

  • Due for Singapore launch in second half of 2015
  • Similar size to BMW X6
  • Three 3.0-litre V6 engines (two petrol, one diesel)
  • 4Matic system and nine-speed auto are standard

Stuttgart, Germany — Here it is, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. In case it isn’t obvious, it’s a rival to the BMW X6. And in case you were wondering, yes, it’s coming to Singapore—it’ll be launched here in the second half of 2015.

The GLE Coupe has been in the works for a while, and was more or less paraded to the world by Mercedes at April’s Beijing motor show, in the form of this Concept Coupe SUV:

“Concept”, indeed! The production model doesn’t actually look too far removed from the show car, and that’s a good thing if you ask us.

It looks nice and posh inside, as well.

Mercedes says the GLE Coupe provides the experience of both a sporty coupe and an SUV (or Sports Utility Vehicle). You sit up high for a towering view of the road, and there’s 4Matic all-wheel drive for the three versions that have been announced so far. Also standard is Mercedes’ new nine-speed auto (which we expect to eventually find its way into the mainstream E-class models).

But the boys from Stuttgart also say they’ve worked hard to give the car a sporty voice and fine on-road handing. There are all sorts of options to help here, too. Airmatic suspension raises or lowers the chassis, a continuously variable damping system (ADS Plus) aids stability, and Active Curve System cuts out body roll.

The launch engines are all 3.0-litre V6 units. One is a turbodiesel with 258 horsepower (GLE 350 d), and then there are two turbo petrols worth 333bhp (GLE 400) and 367bhp (GLE 450 AMG). Mercedes is keeping mum about the performance figures for now.

In terms of its dimensions, the GLE Coupe measures 4900mm long and 2003mm wide, with a height of 1,731mm. Pretty similar to an X6’s footprint, then, but slightly taller—that car measures 4,909mm, 1989mm and 1,689mm respectively.

One view worth pondering is the rear, which Mercedes says was designed to evoke the elegant tail end of the upcoming S-Class Coupe.

Speaking of which, that is also due for launch here soon, with an arrival date set for the first quarter of 2015.

Final versions for our market have yet to be decided, but it won’t be cheap because the basic model is the S 500 Coupe. You could probably have a Porsche 911 for the money but the S-Class Coupe is for people who have a self-assured way of spending their money.

It shares major mechanicals with the S-Class, so you know it’ll be silent and will ride like a cloud, while V8 (S 500 and S 63 AMG) and V12 (S 65 AMG) engines give it effortless performance. The latter sends you to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds, probably without your even knowing it.

Also in the first quarter, the Mercedes-AMG GT lands ashore. The SLS-AMG (the one with gullwing doors, if you remember) was something special, and it left this smaller and cheaper GT a lot to live up to. But the early signs are good. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 delivers 462 horspower and 100km/h in 4.0 seconds flat, and looking at that long bonnet and squat tail, the engine must be set way back to give the car great weight distribution.

It’s German, so you know nothing in the cabin will come off in your hand, and it’s likely to be refined enough to be driven all day. Make ours the GT S, though. That has 510 horsepower, bringing the 0 to 100km/h time to 3.8 seconds. As a very rough estimate, we’re expecting a price tag of roughly $700,000 with COE.

Then there’s the CLA Shooting Brake, which will at least cost a lot less than $200,000 and add plenty of practicality to the baby coupe format.

That’s due for launch in the first half of 2015.

Meanwhile, pricing for the facelifted CLS 400 Coupe and Shooting Brake have already been released here today if you can’t wait for any of the above, but never has there been such an abundance of choice for non-mainstream models from Mercedes. Looks to us like 2015 will be the Year Of The Coupe for fans of the three-pointed star.
