Porsche’s legendary sports car DNA continues undistilled in the updated Macan S

First unveiled to the world in 2014, the Porsche Macan was hailed as a true ‘everyday Porsche’. The Macan series featured all the poise and agility borne from decades of sportscar building and race-winning experience, packed into a medium-sized SUV design that was both city and family-friendly.

Alongside its bigger brother the Porsche Cayenne, the Macan massively expanded the scope of the German carmaker’s breath of ability, which continues to this day.

Now the Porsche Macan has been further sharpened, punching ahead with an even sportier design update that will surely turn heads everywhere it goes.

The Porsche Macan S exemplifies the stunning all-rounder ability of the series, with its new 2.9-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine delivering 380 horsepower, 26 more than the powerplant found in the previous-generation version.

As you would expect, the result is a quicker car, taking 0.5 seconds less to reach 100km/h from a standstill so it now does the century sprint in just 4.6 seconds. 

The completely new front end of the Macan S makes no effort to disguise its aggressive dynamism with those massive cooling air intakes that blend harmoniously with the bonnet’s lines. A unique design component of the Porsche Macan is how the bonnet wraps around and under the headlight assemblies, which are equipped as standard with LED technology and the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System (PDLS) that will swivel the main headlights into bends dynamically, depending on speed and steering angle. 

Across the side profile, the Macan S is unmistakably Porsche because of its sloping roofline that is a signature on every Porsche. There’s an official name for it too, it’s the Porsche flyline. The Macan has another signature in the form of the 3D textured Side Blades, that you can get also in carbon or high-gloss black finish. 

Round the back, where most people in traffic will be admiring this car from, a new rear apron features 3D elements and an extended diffuser with integrated reflectors. Four tailpipes leave you no doubt that there’s some serious horsepower stashed under the bonnet.

More than just functional items, the tail light clusters with dimensional light graphics and a full-width light bar really makes the car stand out in low light.

There is now a choice of 14 exterior colours for the Porsche Macan range. For the purists, the classic Carrera White of the car featured here is always a winning combo. Yet if you want it your way, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, with its Individual Colour and Paint To Sample options, significantly expands your customisation options. More than 60 different colours are possible, including historic Porsche ones.

On the Macan S, bright-polished 20-inch wheels with a dark titanium painted finish come as standard, but there are also a total of seven other wheel designs that you can choose from.

Inside the cabin, the unmistakable Porsche architecture has been further updated, with a new centre console that has intuitively laid-out switches on the touch-sensitive surface. The gear lever is shorter than before so you have a clear view of the 10.9-inch HD touch display on the dashboard, which is the heart of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. The whole setup is topped by another Porsche signature: the analogue clock set high on the dashboard.

With its full connectivity and permanent mobile network connection, online navigation comes as standard in the Macan S, as do voice control and Wi-Fi hotspot. The Porsche Connect App allows you to transfer destinations seamlessly from your smartphone to the car’s navigation system, Apple CarPlay along with Android Auto can also be enabled. 

It has five doors and room for five adults, but the soul of every Porsche is one of a sports car. In case you need a visual reminder from behind the wheel, the Macan S features the same steering wheel as found in the legendary 911 coupe.

Twin-turbochargers, feeding charged air into the six cylinders gives the Macan S a powerful peak torque output of 520Nm and a maximum 380 horsepower. It’s relaxed around town, but when you feel the need and have the space on a back road, the Porsche Macan S delivers with its punchy drive through the self-shifting, seven-speed Porsche PDK dual-clutch transmission. The V6 engine’s deep exhaust note is an aural experience everytime the car accelerates too. And because it’s an off road-capable car, all-wheel drive is standard to the series and this means awesome, sure-footed grip and cornering ability in all conditions.
