Volkswagen Group brand head, Thomas Schäfer has announced that there will be no more cars wearing the SEAT badge, after this model run.

Volkswagen Group brand head, Thomas Schäfer has mentioned that Spanish auto brand, SEAT will eventually be repurposed. The announcement, which was made during the first days of the IAA Mobility Summit in Munich this week, comes on the tail of SEAT posting their best half-year results in the company’s history.

The Spanish car brand, which began life with FIAT as a stakeholder, boasted a sales revenue of €7,411-billion, in the first half of 2023. This is 37.6-percent more than the same period the year before. Part of its positive performance had been driven by their CUPRA offshoot.

SEAT Arona

In our opinion, prior to this announcement, SEAT had prepared for this direction change, teasing their SEAT MÓ range of mico mobility vehicles, as early as the second half of the last decade. The current MÓ range includes two electric “kick” style scooters, and three electric scooters, the latter which boasts a removable battery solution. The brand will also go on to focus on mobility sharing and subscriptions.

SEAT will cease production of their remaining cars after this final model run. We also understand that Vertex Euro Motors, Singapore’s SEAT and former CUPRA dealership, will clear their current stock of SEAT cars, which consists of the B-segment Ibiza hatch and Arona SUV, and the C-segment Ateca SUV, by the end of this year.

CUPRA, which began as SEAT’s “Volkswagen anything GTI” equivalent brand, has enjoyed great success (cue Borat) in its European home market. The unveiling of the CUPRA Dark Rebel concept car, also during the IAA Mobility Summit, is telling of parent Volkswagen Group’s interest in growing the CUPRA marque.

Back home, VGS (the guys who sell Volkswagen and Škoda) announced in the middle of 2023, that CUPRA would be sold under their wing. There will initially be a two-car lineup, consisting of the now-familiar Formentor, and the VW Golf-sized Born, the latter is built on the group’s electric MEB architecture.
