Pagani has unleashed its third hypercar, the Utopia, which replaces the Huayra, and features a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 and a manual gearbox

MILAN, ITALY

Pagani has unveiled the Utopia, its replacement for the Huayra and only the third hypercar model in the company’s history. The Utopia features a lightweight design, and decidedly old-school technology, with a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 as well as a manual gearbox.

Production for the Utopia will be limited to just 99 units worldwide, with an estimated pricing of around 2 million Euros without taxes, or around S$2.8 million. As yet, the allocation for Singapore has not been determined, and it is unclear if there have been any buyers for the car here.

Pagani says that the Utopia has been built around lightness and driving pleasure, and has opted against the move towards electrification as a result. The car uses a carbon tub that helps the Utopia keep its weight down to just 1,280kg, which makes it 67kg lighter than its Huayra predecessor, and some 716kg lighter than the Pininfarina Battista electric hypercar.

The other major change on the Utopia is the introduction of a seven-speed manual transmission, which is a departure from the sequential automatic gearbox from the Huayra. However, the new gearbox is actually an automated manual with an electro-mechanical differential, with a switchable automatic mode that drivers can use in urban conditions.

Power for the Utopia comes from a 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine sourced from Mercedes-AMG, and the unit produces 864hp and 1,100Nm of torque. Pagani did not disclose performance figures, but it is expected to surpass that of the Huayra given the Utopia’s lighter weight and increased power.

Other highlights include the Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes, as well as 21-inch forged alloy wheels in front and 22-inch wheels at the rear, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres. The Utopia also features independent double wishbone suspension all-round with helical springs and electronically controlled shock absorbers.

The styling of the Utopia has been relatively simplified, and tones down on the aggressive active aero look of the Huayra. Company founder Horacio Pagani says that the Utopia has been designed to look ‘simple and timeless’, and disclosed that it asked customers for input over the car’s styling.

As a result, there are a notable lack of large spoilers and wings, and the Utopia features a softer and more functional look. However, Pagani adds that the Utopia still manages to achieve increased downforce and reduced drag over the Huayra. The iconic central mounted quad exhaust, a Pagani trademark, is carried over on the Utopia.

Inside, the cabin follows on from the simplistic styling language of the exterior, with a straightforward layout featuring milled switches and a steering wheel crafted from a solid aluminium block. There is a distinct lack of screens in the interior, with only one situated in the instrument panel in front of the driver.
