BMW has unveiled its Vision Neue Klasse concept, which previews a potential future electric version of the next-generation 3 Series

MUNICH, GERMANY

BMW has unveiled its Vision Neue Klasse concept, and the car offers a preview of the upcoming new electric version of the next-generation 3 Series, which is expected to go into production in 2025. The Vision Neue Klasse points towards the brand’s all-electric future, and will be the first of six ‘Neue Klasse’ series of electric vehicles that BMW will launch across its range between 2025 and 2027.

The name harks back to BMW Neue Klasse from the 1960s, which eventually became the BMW 2002, and subsequently evolved into today’s 3 Series. BMW hopes that the new ‘Neue Klasse’ will kick start a similar transformative journey and spearhead the brand into a new all-electric era. The ultimate target for BMW is to have an electric car in each of its core market segments, and for a quarter of its global sales to be electric by the time of the new 3 Series’ launch in 2025.

The first of these Neue Klasse models will be a 3 Series-sized sedan which will go head-to-head with the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. BMW insists that the Vision Neue Klasse is just a preview, and that the production version might be completely different, but the concept car does offer hints of what the future series of Neue Klasse electric vehicles might be like.

BMW envisions that the Neue Klasse will mark a reboot for the brand, deviating even from its current BMW i series of electric cars. The Neue Klasse series will feature the sixth-generation version of BMW’s eDrive electric architecture, with more efficient motors and new battery cells that have greater energy density from BMW’s current lineup of EVs. BMW also promises more efficiency, greater range and faster charging, although no specific figures have been revealed as yet.

The design will also be pared down, departing from the bold and aggressive looks of recent BMW models. The overall philosophy is to be “clear, elegant and timeless”, and the interior may feature some of the tech already previewed on the previous i Vision Dee concept, such as the Panoramic Vision, which is a large information and navigation filled head-up display that runs across the full width of the windscreen and is controlled using gestures by either the driver or passenger.

The Vision Neue Klasse concept will be showcased at the 2023 Munich Auto Show, and follows on from the i Vision Dee concept which was previewed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year, as well as the i Vision Circular concept that was first seen in 2021.
