Six injured and one dead after GetGo driver beats a red light in Yishun, Singapore

The driver of a GetGo car was killed after colliding with an SBS Transit bus in Yishun on 13 January 2023 resulting in one dead and six injured.

A video posted by SG Road Vigilante on YouTube showed a dark blue SsangYong Tivoli running a red light before crashing into the right side of an SBS Transit bus number 117.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at about 10.55 pm and found a person trapped in the driver’s seat of the car and had to be rescued by hydraulic rescue equipment.

In total, seven people were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, including the unconscious driver who subsequently died, said the SCDF. Six other bus passengers, aged between 22 and 40, were conscious when taken to hospital, the police said.

Since the incident, car-sharing company GetGo said: “We are aware of the incident and are assisting the police with the investigations.”

CarBuyer Analysis:  While the reasons for the accident are not entirely clear at this point, a case like this where a car is speeding towards a large, essentially immovable object typically results in serious injuries or death for the occupants of the car. Active safety systems help mitigate or prevent these types of accidents, which is why we highly recommend car buyers choose vehicles with these systems as standard.

In such a case, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) would have helped warn the driver and reduce the car’s speed automatically.
