McLaren has pulled the wraps off the 750S, which replaces the best-selling 720S, and brings on more power and performance upgrades

SINGAPORE

McLaren has unveiled the 750S, its replacement for the best-selling 720S, and while the new car is based upon its predecessor, McLaren claims that the 750S is some 30 percent of the components under the skin are new. The 750S is more powerful and lighter than the car it replaces, and there are also major chassis modifications for improved agility.

The 750S will be available in both hardtop coupe and droptop Spider forms, and will go on sale in Europe later this year, but there is no indication of its availability for Singapore as of yet. Pricing too has yet to be finalised, but the 750S is expected to command a slight premium over the 720S it replaces.

As the name suggests, the 750S’ 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 develops a power output of 750hp, an increase of 30hp over the 720S, with torque standing at 800Nm. 0-100km/h comes up in 2.8 seconds, while the car can reach a top speed of 332km/h. The performance enhancements include a new triple-layer head gasket, new twin fuel pumps, higher-pressure turbos, lighter pistons and a sports exhaust that’s been lightened by 2.2kg, and is now positioned centrally like the McLaren P1.

The 750S is also some 30kg lighter than the 720S, with the new car’s having a dry weight of 1,277kg, making it the lightest McLaren series-production road car yet. The key areas where weight has been shaved were the carbon fibre-shelled alloy wheels (13.8kg), the carbon race seats (17.5kg), the instrument cluster (1.6kg), and the thinner windscreen glass (1.6kg).

Chassis enhancements include a front track that’s been widened by 6mm, a faster steering rack, lighter springs which are 3 percent softer at the front and 4 percent stiffer at the rear, a new brake booster for improved pedal feel, as well as an upgraded version of McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control system which minimises body roll and improves refinement.

Inside, the 750S also gets a number of design improvements for a more driver-focused experience. The instrument display now moves along with the steering column for greater visibility, and the drive mode selector is mounted at the top corner of the display for easy reach. The 8.0-inch central infotainment touchscreen is now complemented by buttons for various functions such as launch control as well as aerodynamic adjustment settings.

Externally, the 750S gets subtle styling changes over the car it replaces, including a new front bumper incorporating a larger splitter for optimised aero performance, larger air intakes to boost cooling and slim new LED headlights. The biggest change however is the active rear wing, which now has a 20 percent larger surface area, and is claimed to significantly boost downforce and increase braking performance.
