New Skoda electric car hops in on the coupe-SUV trend, but a Singapore launch is not yet on the cards

Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic –

After the launch of the all-electric Skoda Enyaq iV in 2020, the Czech Republic brand’s EV range is being expanded with the Enyaq iV Coupe. Skoda’s expanding electric vehicle range is significant to us while the brand is still weighing up the feasibility of offering them for sale in Singapore.

The Enyaq iV that was launched two years ago as an urban crossover SUV,  and new Enyaq iV Coupe is a four-door coupe-SUV. Both are built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric vehicle platform that also form the backbone of the all-electric Volkswagen ID.5 and ID.6

The two variants of the Enyaq iV are made at Skoda’s main production plant in Mladá Boleslav, making them the only MEB-platformed models within the Volkswagen Group in Europe that are manufactured outside of Germany.

Visually, the Skoda Enyaq Coupe iV is characterised by a roofline that gently slopes towards the rear from the B-pillar onwards, merging with the tailgate that features a sharp trailing edge. It’s a silhouette that’s very similar across all sizes of SUV-coupes, from the pioneering BMW X6 to the Audi Q5 Sportback and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

The new car is 4,653 mm long, 1,879 mm wide and 1,622 mm high with a wheelbase clocking in at 2,765 mm. That makes it about 15cm longer than the Volkswagen Tiguan and MG HS PHEV

A dark tinted panoramic glass roof, the largest you can find on a Skoda, is standard fit. Wheel sizes span from 19 to 21-inches and body-coloured side skirts give it the illusion of being lower slung than the standard SUV Enyaq iV.

Power output starts at 204 horsepower with the rear-wheel-drive Enyaq Coupe iV 80, which is equipped with an 82-kWh battery. It will pull off a 0 to 100km/h sprint in 8.8 seconds, which for an electric car with more than 200hp actually isn’t all that quick.

In addition to the base model, the new EV is also available as a sportier, more powerful vRS model, making it the first all-electric member of the vRS family from Skoda. The Enyaq Coupe iV vRS uses a second motor on the front axle to provide all-wheel drive and produces a total power output of 299 horsepower. The 0 to 100km/h sprint is ticked off in 6.5 seconds. That’s nowhere near as ballistic as a Tesla Model 3 Performance but is just about on par with a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Efficient aerodynamics and a drag coefficient of just 0.234, enable the Enyaq Coupe iV 80 to boast a range of more than 539km in the WLTP cycle.

There are no plans to have any of Skoda’s electric vehicles on sale in Singapore just yet, as Skoda Singapore has noted that it needs to weigh up the pros and cons of the rebates for early EV adopters , VES changes  and new local EV classifications against the cars’ import costs. In other words, for it to be a viable proposition they must be able to be sold at a competitive price in Singapore.
