SINGAPORE

Plenty of players are working on the idea of electric motorcycles and scooters, and Singaporean company Scorpio Electric is one of the few here that has made a huge leap in progress since its proof of concept was first shown in 2019.

Despite development taking place largely during the Covid-19 pandemic between 2020 to 2022, Scorpio Electric rolled through four prototype models before arriving at the pre-production prototype, or PPR, in July this year. The brand states, “Scorpio Electric is currently building PPR units in collaboration with Chinese enterprise Shenzhen BYD Electronics. These PPR units will further undergo rigorous testing, certification, and homologation to ensure the highest standards of quality and performance are met.”

As previously detailed in an earlier news story, Scorpio was founded by Singaporean Melvin Goh and is a part of public-listed sports car distributor EuroSports Global.

Despite the pre-production prototypes being assembled by BYD in Shenzhen, China, the Scorpio X1 is not using a BYD battery but instead a 5kWh battery from Samsung. It was explained that the X1 was designed with the Samsung battery as part of the concept and that it was too late in the process to switch over to BYD batteries. However if this collaboration continues Scorpio Electric has plans to integrate BYD’s batteries, touted as one of the safest in the world, into its future designs.

Scorpio Electric will be taking part in the Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori (EICMA) exhibition, scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy from 7-12 November 2023. The company plans to drum up interest for the X1 with its official unveiling there, alongside other future electric motorcycle models.

Meanwhile, over at BMW, there’s this very expensive electric scooter

Scorpio Electric has designed the X1 to be a premium, zero-emissions product that will be highly relevant in European inner-city commuting and expect it to be the product’s main market.

The X1 is planned to go on sale worldwide in 2024. It has a 10kW motor with a claimed range of 200km at 40km/h. At an AC charge rate of 1.5kW the battery pack charges from zero to 90 percent in three hours. Other design highlights include anti-lock brakes, LED headlights with adaptive cornering lights, a 7-inch TFT instrument display, and integrated onboard storage for a full face helmet.
