Hyundai’s Elantra N high-performance sedan gets a mid-life update; hot version of Avante not currently earmarked for Singapore

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

Hyundai has given its Elantra N a mid-life facelift, but the car is not currently earmarked for Singapore. The performance version of the Elantra sedan, also known as the Avante locally, has been on sale in various markets like the US since 2021, but local Hyundai distributor Komoco Motors has not indicated if it will be offering the model for sale here.

The main cosmetic changes to the car, which will also likely be reflected on the updated version of the regular Elantra/Avante sedan, include a redesigned front bumper and grille, revised LED projector headlamps, and updated rear bumper. The performance-oriented Elantra N also gets new 19-inch forged alloy wheels paired with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber.

There are also tweaks under the skin to optimise the Elantra N’s driving capabilities as well. These include a reinforced engine-mount membrane for reduced vibrations and improved agility, along with a new rear-suspension insulator for improved damping and yaw response. The electronically-controlled suspension also gets software updates to match the revised handling hardware.

The steering has also been tweaked for better feedback and a more direct feel, and also gets software changes in tandem with the suspension upgrades. The redesigned front grille and bumper also further aids with aerodynamics efficiency and cooling the engine and braking systems, while the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) programme has also been updated.

Power for the Elantra N comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot that produces 280hp and 392Nm of torque, and in the American market the car is available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. In the local context a car like the Elantra/Avante N would likely go head-to-head with something like the Volkswagen Golf GTI, or more likely, the Skoda Octavia RS, which would mean a price tag of around S$250,000 or so at current COE prices.
