Opel has announced that it will launch a full-electric version of the Astra in Europe in early 2023. While it’s been a couple of years since you could buy a new Opel Astra in Singapore, the car has continued to be a mainstream seller in Europe with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.

The new Opel Astra Electric, whose European pricing has also not yet ben confirmed, is based on Stellantis’ EMP2 platform. The EMP2 also forms the backbone of another significant mass market model in Europe, the Peugeot e-308.

The electric Astra will have a 54 kWh battery, with a new chemistry that is 80 percent nickel, 10 percent manganese and 10 percent cobalt. The electric Astra’s drivetrain is a collaboration between Opel’s parent company Stellantis and Japanese company Nidec, and has an output of 156 hp. Efficiency is 14.9 kWh/100 km, according to WLTP certification, Opel says. Maximum range for the Astra has been quoted as 416km.

Internationally, the electric Astra will be Opel’s third full-electric passenger car model in its lineup, after the Corsa and Mokka. Opel has stated that it aims to become an electric-only brand in Europe by 2028.

While European delivered Opels are left-hand drive, the electric Astras has been confirmed for the United Kingdom in right-hand drive variants as well, to be sold badged as the electric Vauxhall Astra. This opens the door for the new car to make its way to Asia, including Singapore. However it is still too early to know for certain whether or not the car will be offered for sale in Singapore eventually.
