1015 Horsepower Hybrid Lamborghini Revuelto revealed

Lamborghini’s Aventador successor retains its V12 engine but now has a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a system output of 1015 horsepower.

SINGAPORE

It’s been 12 years since the naturally aspirated V12 Aventador first made its debut. In that time, the prevalence of hybridised powertrains has grown considerably, even within the supercar/hypercar coterie.

With more and more supercar manufacturers hopping on the hybrid bandwagon (think Ferrari 296 GTB, McLaren Artura or Honda NSX), Lamborghini has finally revealed their next hybrid V12 successor; The Revuelto.

The Lamborghini Revuelto, named after yet another fighting bull, is a plug-in hybrid supercar that looks quintessentially Lambo-esque with its long, wide stance and outlandish looks with design influences borrowed from other Lamborghini models like the Sián or Veneno.

The Revuelto also stays true to the Italian brand’s roots by way of its mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine. But that V12 powertrain now sees the addition of three electric motors; two on the front axle powering a wheel each, one within Lamborghini’s newly developed 8-speed double-clutch gearbox.

Being a PHEV, the Revuelto can even be driven in full EV mode should one feel inclined to do so. One simply needs to select Città – just one of 13 driving modes – and you’d have 180 electric horsepower on tap. According to Lamborghini, the addition of the hybrid system reduces CO2 emissions by 30% compared to the Aventador Ultimae, the swansong of the venerable Aventador.

Now, hybridisation isn’t new to Lamborghini. Since the debut of the Aventador, Lamborghini has produced numerous derivatives of their V12 supercar. Some of which include one-off vehicles, track-only machines and monstrously powerful hybrid vehicles. Namely, the Countach LPI 800-4, the Sián and the Sián Roadster.

But while all three of the aforementioned Avenatdor offshoots use a supercapacitor to dispense and regenerate electricity quickly, the Revuelto uses a more conventional Li-Ion battery pack mounted along the spine of the car. Mind you, it’s not a big battery with just 3.8kWh’s worth of electric juice. But one only needs to peek at the Revuelto’s performance metrics to see how impressive it is.

Lamborghini calls this an HPEV – High Performance Electrified Vehicle – and it’s not hard to see why. On its own, the 6.5-litre V12 produces 825 horsepower and 725Nm of torque. But with the electric motors in play, the combined system output soars to a stratospheric 1015 horsepower.

On paper, the Lamborghini Revuelto does 0-100km/h in 2.5 seconds and climbs to a top speed of 350km/h. Reining in all that power are a set of carbon ceramic discs all round, with 10-piston brakes in the front and four-piston brakes in the rear. And it isn’t only in the straight line speed (and stopping) department where the Revuelto improves upon the Aventador.

Without fluids and a driver, the Revuelto tips the scales at just 1,772kg. Roughly a fifth of a ton heavier than the Aventador, but its monofuselage monocoque is 10% lighter than that of the Aventador’s and 25% stiffer than the older car’s chassis.

Gone is the push-rod suspension setup in the Aventador, making way for the electric gubbins. Instead, Lamborghini has adopted double wishbones all around and of course, lots and lots of carbon in the monofuselage.

It’s clear that electrification is here to stay, and Lamborghini knows this. The brand has already committed to producing an all-electric vehicle by 2030, so we’re certain that the Revuelto is just the first of many electrified Lamborghinis on the brand’s horizon.
